Society of Jewish Ethics Proposal Guidelines
Proposals for the 2026 SJE Annual Conference can be submitted either as individual papers or as pre-arranged panels on a shared topic. Because we will be fully online this year, all panel formats will optimize audience engagement and participation. Panels this year may take the form of pre-circulated papers and discussion, lightning rounds (multiple speakers presenting 5-7 minute papers), or roundtable discussions (conversations between 3-4 participants on a pre-selected topic). You will have the option to select one or more of these formats for your paper or panel in the proposal submission form. Pre-circulated papers and discussion:

3 or 4 papers per session plus optional respondent

Sessions will consist of a brief overview during the session for each paper pre-circulated; optional response; moderated discussion and Q&A; and closing thoughts from panelists

500-700 word proposal
Lightning round:

Multiple speakers presenting 5-7 minute papers, followed by Q&A

5-8 speakers per panel

350 word proposal for each paper
Roundtable discussion:

3-4 participants plus a moderator

Prepared but unscripted discussion on a predetermined topic, followed by Q&A

Proposals should explain the overall goals of the session, present several specific questions that the discussants will address, and explain the perspective that each discussant will contribute to the sessions. Proposals should also share a brief description of each participant’s anticipated role, including the moderator. Proposal should be no longer than 1,000 words.
